I loved Mama in the morning...

I loved Mama in the morning, especially on a Saturday morning in the Spring. Mama would have a cup of CDM coffee, black. She’d make me iced coffee with heavy cream and a lot of sugar. It tasted like candy. She made me grits with a soft-boiled egg and a little bit of Sea Salt. Then she’d start drinking and gardening. First, we’d sit on the patio and listen to The Gestalt Gardener call in show on Mississippi Public Radio. Then, I was given gardening chores. “Pull out those weeds, turn the soil, scatter the zinnias and sunflowers - doesn’t matter where they land. Wet them down and spread out the Black Kow.”

I followed her instincts until they were my own. I have a green thumb and am always inspired by new methods of growing. I still plant the exact same things she planted. Zinnias and sunflowers.
