I made new friends at Penland, too. Mark and Elizabeth. Initially over beer. It was a dry county, and I didn’t bring any and they had extra. I about fell out when they said they were from Savannah. I had just been to there to help one of Mama’s former art students open a gallery and was ready to move.
They about fell out when I said I had a husband.
They were sure I was gay, but didn’t mention it.
